Attending and running events for the Financial Services industry means I often find myself as “the odd one out”, in rooms and stages that are filled prevalently
Things have surely changed since I started my career in this sector back in 2007, but there is still a steep path ahead for an equal gender representation at such convenings.

“How was it?” I was asked when I came back from TEDWomen 2018.
It was so hard to answer!
I had the immense privilege of attending my first ever TEDWomen event earlier this month. I still find it hard to describe it in just a couple of words. It meant so much to me on so many levels. I will try to explain.
It is my belief that personal branding can redress the balance for women in business.
As someone who builds personal brands, I love spotting trends and patterns. Although my methodology doesn’t change, the approach and output can vary greatly depending on the client but one thing I’ve noticed time and time again is the questions I’m being asked.
In 2015 one of my job titles was ‘tribebuilder’ at Tribewanted. We co-created a tiny eco-tourism community with the local clan of Gonubalabala in Papua New Guinea. It was a project which involved all of my favourite things in the world: travel, adventure, coaching, sustainability and community life.
…It’s my fourth anniversary of becoming a civilian.
I love this anniversary. It marks such a fundamental change in my life. One of real fork-in-the-road moments in life. I really enjoy taking some time to reflect on what’s happened in the last year and to check-in with the new life I’m creating for myself.
Surround yourself with people who cheer you on and you’ll have much higher chance of success.
Naturally, we all have a different definition of success, and I hope you do too. There’s no point chasing someone else’s dream!
Therefore it’s important to make an informed and independent decision on what kind of network is right for you.
What on earth is the fear of success?
We all know it takes courage and self-belief to start a business. But one thing I’ve discovered is that the journey of personal development doesn’t end when you take that brave step of hanging the ‘open’ sign in your metaphorical shop window.
Your story is absolutely essential to tell. It connects your audience intimately and emotionally to both you and your product. Share this on every communication and product.
2017 is in full swing. I hope this is just the beginning of a powerful chapter in your personal and professional journeys. While we have control of our own lives (truly, we do, despite the challenges), it’s not the same for many others.
